Candlelight weekend kicks off Thursday at 6 with the lighting of a new Christmas tree on the Old Capitol lawn.

Candlelight Weekend is downtown Frankfort's biggest annual event, with a tradition spanning over forty years.

"Every city has their own kickoff to the holidays, and this is ours," said Suzy Hosley, Executive Director of Downtown Frankfort Incorporated. She says residents and visitors are treated to visions of Frankfort at its warmest, with storefronts dressed up for a window display contest. For Hosley, walking through town during Candlelight feels like starring in a holiday special.

"It's Stars Hollow on steroids," she said. "It is a true small-town Hallmark community event."

Candlelight activities include live music, letter-writing sessions to the North Pole, craft workshops (including pottery and wreathmaking), holiday bakesales, and special offerings from local shops, cafes, and vendors.

"And there's going to be a life-size snowglobe that you can go in and get pictures," said Hosley. "That's where Santa will be."
