A Lexington council member facing a yearslong protective order is appealing the decision.

Brenda Monarrez is not allowed within 500 feet of the government center after a judge granted a protective order sought by Monarrez’s fellow council member Denise Gray. Gray has accused Monarrez of multiple instances of unwanted sexual advances, an allegation Monarrez fully denies.

With the protective order expanded until 2027, Monarrez says in the court filing the situation – which has kept her working from home and attending council meetings virtually – is untenable and limiting her ability to represent her Fourth District constituents.

In addition, WKYT reports the appeal also attempts to draw a line between the judge in the case – Traci Brislin – and council funding for organizations in which she participates, suggesting impropriety.

Monarrez is up for re-election. Her opponent, Emma Curtis, has called on the incumbent to drop out.
