Howard Berkes retired from NPR at the end of 2018 after 38 years in public media, much of it as NPR’s rural correspondent bringing us stories like the 2010 Upper Big Branch coal-mine disaster and most recently working on the PBS Frontline documentary Coal’s Deadly Dust. Howard is in Lexington this week to receive the Tom and Pat Gish Award for Excellence in Rural Journalism, presented by the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues and the Society of Professional Journalists, Bluegrass Chapter, and he came by our studios for a tour and interview with Alan Lytle.
