Starting Sunday More Pregnant Moms Addicted To Opioids Could Lose Custody Of Their Babies
On the eve of House Bill 1, which becomes law July 1st, independent producer Nadia Ramlagan spoke with Gracie, a 32-year-old mother of two boys, who is now in recovery from opioid addiction. One section of the bill expands the definition of child abuse in Kentucky to include infant withdrawal, also called neonatal abstinence syndrome or NAS. A baby diagnosed with NAS could be permanently taken away from its mother if she does not enroll in a drug addiction treatment program within three months of the birth. Nadia first interviewed Gracie for an OA Chronicles segment on pregnant women and the opioid epidemic.
