Horse Trainer Asmussen's HOF Nomination On Hold Pending Abuse Investigation

Trainer Steve Asmussen's nomination to the Racing Hall of Fame has been put on hold pending an animal abuse investigation.

Asmussen and his top assistant are being investigated by regulators in New York and Kentucky after an animal rights group alleged they mistreated horses.

The hall says it has "decided it is in the best interests of the institution and the sport of thoroughbred racing to table" Asmussen's nomination.

Asmussen ranks second among trainers in career racing victories with more than 6,700. He served a six-month suspension in 2006 after a filly he trained tested 750 times over the legal limit in Louisiana for a local anesthetic used to deaden pain in a horse's legs so it will continue to run.
