Xylazine, a veterinary anesthetic commonly referred to as “tranq,” has recently made its way into the illicit drug supply as a drug adulterant to enhance the effects of fentanyl, a potent opioid that can be lethal even in small amounts. The new drug combination has resulted in a 1,127% increase in xylazine-positive overdose mortalities in the American south from 2020 to 2021, and results in other problematic health effects including tissue necrosis. Now two researchers at the University of Kentucky will use a $2.65M grant to study how xylazine and fentanyl change the brain’s signaling pathways. This week Dr. Greg talks with Cassandra Gipson-Reichardt, associate professor in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences, who is conducting the study with fellow professor Terry Hinds, Jr.

She also works with and educates community leaders, health care workers, lawyers, judges, legislators and police departments on the topic of domestic violence and abuse and how to move those from victim to survivor.These two guests speak to 1) what DV really is versus what a lot of people think it is, 2) sharing of their experience and backstories, 3) the difference between being a victim and a survivor, 4) Michigan and Kentucky state legislation that protects those affected, how this issue affects humanity, 5) what happens if it is not addressed, 6) PTSD and therapies and 7) legal issues that have to be navigated to escape DV and 8) strategies to help anyone who is living in an abusive situation for advocates who are working to move victims to inner, mental, spiritual and physical peace.

Of the 74 people who lost their lives in Kentucky that evening, 24 resided in Graves County, where Mayfield is located. Marty Brennaman was the play-by-play broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds for 46 seasons, from 1974 through 2019. He was named baseball’s Ford Frick Award winner in 2000, making him a member of the broadcasters’ wing of the baseball Hall of Fame. He is best known for his long tenure in Cincinnati, but he was also a prominent college basketball broadcaster. His assignments included two seasons as the television voice of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, 1986-87 and 1987-88. He broadcast NCAA tournament games for 17 years.Before joining the Reds, he called the games of the Triple-A Tidewater Tides. He was also the voice of Virginia Tech football, and of the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association. He was the Virginia Tech broadcaster when the Hokies played Kentucky at the first game at Commonwealth Stadium in 1973. In March of 1992, he called the Kentucky-Duke regional final for NCAA radio.

Dr. Greg Davis brings us a cancer-journey update from friend and WUKY colleague Karyn Czar who received a bone marrow transplant as part of her treatment for multiple myeloma almost three months ago. In this particular conversation Karyn details the mental and emotional challenges too often obscured by the physical recovery process. She also is sharing her story in hopes of ending the stigma associated with talking openly about mental health issues. Karyn maintains that if all goes according to plan she will return to the WUKY airwaves sometime next month.
