The Kentucky Derby has been run on the first Saturday in May since 1931. That is, however, until this year—it's been postponed until September—but some Kentuckians will still enjoy a good race.
In honor of tradition, the UK Alumni Association is hosting the First Saturday in May Virtual 5k, inviting alumni, friends and students to run, walk, roll or crawl 5 kilometers, roughly 3.1 miles.
Participation is free, and everyone who signs up will receive a virtual runner's bib and certificate of participation. Participants who also make a donation of any amount to UK’s Basic Needs and Persistence Fund will receive a physical certificate and a special gift from the UK Alumni Association.
The virtual run can be completed at any location and at any time on race day. Participants can submit a picture wearing UK or Derby gear (or both) for a chance to be featured on UK Alumni Association social media accounts. Photos can be sent to ukalumni@uky.edu or by using the hashtag #FirstSaturdayinMayVirtual5K on social media.
