Pro soccer is coming to Lexington

Karyn Czar

The announcement of a formal “awarding of franchise in UL League One” was made Tuesday morning in downtown Lexington with members from the United Soccer League, Mayor Linda Gorton and Bill Shively with Tower Hill Sports on hand. Shively is the majority owner of the new League One franchise which will play their first game in 2023.

“I’m really, really excited about what we’re doing here. Suffice it to say that we’re going to have a soccer team here and it’s going to be a pro soccer team and we’re going to win the games.” Shively said, “I’m very competitive in case you don’t know. So this is going to be a winning team.”

The soccer club will play their first season at college facilities and plan a formal announcement on a more permanent home in the near future.
