Former UK student sentenced to year in prison for assault of fellow student

Fayette County Detention Center

Sophia Rosing, who admitted to kicking, punching, and hurling racial slurs at a fellow University of Kentucky student in 2022 was sentenced on Thursday to a 12-month prison sentence, 100 hours of community service, and a $25 fine.

Rosing, who is from Fort Mitchell Kentucky, pleaded guilty in August to four counts of fourth-degree assault, one count of disorderly conduct, and one count of alcohol intoxication.
A video of the incident went viral. It shows Kylah Spring, a Black student who was working at the front desk of Boyd Hall, trying to help Rosing who was intoxicated and struggling to get in. Rosing responded with a string of racial slurs and a physical attack on Spring.

According to the police report, Rosing also assaulted a police officer who responded to the incident.

The University of Kentucky expelled Rosing and banned her from campus permanently.
