Estimates for the new Henry Clay High School jump by tens of millions

The estimated cost of construction work on an aging Lexington high school has shot up by $34 million.

Henry Clay High School has seen a number of environmental complaints and safety concerns, including even wildlife infestation, in recent years. All of which have led to evolving plans for new and upgraded facilities – including three stories and a pair of courtyards.

But the latest price tag is what’s getting attention this week. At a planning meeting, documents showed the estimate at nearly $186 million, a $34 million increase.

The vast majority of the new costs — $30 million — are for labor and materials, which district leaders say have risen sharply nationwide post-pandemic. The remaining $4 million in spending would pay for IT and technology upgrades.

Approval of the new design is set for October 28.
