The new interim health commissioner and now former medical director, Dr. Steve Davis, started the top job on Monday, as the health department continues what’s turned into a lengthy search for a permanent commissioner.
A statement from the Board of Health calls Davis a proven leader – playing a key role in childhood development and diabetic programs.
The health department has dealt with an unusual amount of turnover at the top in recent years – with the previous interim director stepping down just last month. His tenure began in April 2023 after Dr. Sheila Owens-Collins was fired after just three months on the job.
Davis will now oversee the department’s health clinic, restaurant and other inspections, the city’s needle exchange program, and other duties.
