Governor Beshear signs historic bills legalizing medical cannabis, sports betting in Kentucky

Governor Beshear said it took lawmakers from both parties to get SB 47 which legalizes medical marijuana and HB 551 which legalizes sports betting passed.

For Eric Crawford, who is paraplegic and needs medical cannabis instead of turning to opioids for pain relief, it’s been a long fight but one he calls well worth it.

The medical marijuana law allows the drug to be used in edible, topical or vapor form but does not allow you to smoke it. It will go into effect in January of 2025. The sports betting bill allows you to use phones, computers, and mobile devices to bet on college and pro sports and will go into effect once an opinion on a start date is released by Attorney General Daniel Cameron.
