Judge denies Baffert request to reverse Churchill Downs ban

Associated Press

A federal judge has denied Bob Baffert’s request to lift his two-year suspension by Churchill Downs. The judge says the Hall of Fame trainer did not prove its discipline hurt his business and reputation.

The ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings means Baffert will miss his second straight Kentucky Derby. He has until Feb. 28 to transfer his Derby-eligible horses to other trainers in order for them to possibly run in the May 6 race. Baffert sued the Louisville track following his ban after a failed post-race drug test by Medina Spirit, who crossed the finish line first in the 147th Derby only to be disqualified.
