GOP bill would reopen section of Capitol Avenue that Beshear ordered closed

Lawmakers in Frankfort moved a bill forward on Monday that would reopen a stretch of Capitol Avenue that was blocked off last fall for security precautions. WUKY’s Karyn Czar reports from Frankfort.

In September, Governor Andy Beshear closed off traffic on Capital Avenue between the Kentucky State Capitol and the Capitol Annex. The move came after security recommendations were given from state and federal officials. Senate Bill 98 would reopen that stretch of the roadway to through traffic. Senator Adrienne Southworth says many of her constituents favor the bill.

Senator Morgan McGarvey reminded lawmakers that earlier in the day, a gunman walked into an office in Louisville and attempted to shoot Mayoral candidate Craig Greenburg who was meeting with four staffers. No one was hurt but McGarvey says security must be a top priority.

The bill does allow the roadway to be shut down under certain circumstances. It passed 24 to 8 and heads to the House.
