Multiple people were shot along a section of highway in southeastern Kentucky Saturday. The ongoing active shooter situation led to the temporary closure of interstate about 90 miles south of Lexington.

Police closed down but have since reopened a portion of interstate as a manhunt remains underway. Mayor Randall Weddle of nearby London, KY said at least seven people were injured, but not all due to gunshots.

Weddle had this advice for those in the area around Laurel County.

"If you are out and about, be vigilant. If you don't need to be out tonight, I'm asking you just to go home, secure yourselves there," he said in a Facebook post.

Local, state, and federal authorities are involved in the search, in what Weddle called "rugged terrain."

Law enforcement has identified Joseph Couch as a person of interest wanted in connection to the shootings.

An image has been released, but it's unclear how many people are involved or what the motive might be.
