En garde! Lexington fencing champion shows off her new gold hardware, courtesy of the Paris Olympics

Governor's Office

Lexington fencing phenom Lee Kiefer earned plaudits back home this week – with Gov. Andy Beshear devoting his team Kentucky All-Star segment to the University of Kentucky medical student and three-time Olympic gold medalist.

Kiefer took part in the governor's weekly press conference via video message.

"Hi, governor. Thank you so much for recognizing me this week. It is an absolute honor as a Kentuckian to represent our state and our country on an international stage," she said.

She ended by thanking her teammates and coach, and showing off the newest addition to her medal collection.

"Check out the hardware!" she said.

Beshear noted that Kiefer's wins in Paris made her the first American fencer in history to win three Olympic gold medals.

"It is truly amazing. To Lee, you have represented Kentucky and the United States of America so well, we are so proud of you," Beshear said.

Kiefer is an Ohio native who was raised in Lexington.
