In a statement released Monday, ACLU policy strategist Kungu Njuguna said the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women had been without air conditioning since Friday, August 2.
The civil liberties group called on the Department of Corrections to “immediately take appropriate action” to ensure the safety of Kentuckians who live and work in prisons.
In response, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet told WUKY on Tuesday that the AC was working at the facility except for the main building annex, a wing that houses a small number of women. In the meantime, they said fans had been installed and the staff was closely monitoring the temperature.
The cabinet now reports a vendor has repaired the AC and it's back up and running.
