Former VP contender Beshear calls Walz a 'great friend and a great choice' for the Democratic ticket

Kentucky Democrats — including Gov. Andy Beshear — are reacting to presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris’s selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate.

Kentucky Democratic Party chair Colmon Elridge applauded Harris's choice, saying he understands "the kitchen table issues that matter most to Americans." Eldidge calls Walz a champion for working families, affordable healthcare and reproductive rights, among other causes.

The decision ends Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear's stretch as a VP contender. UK elections analyst Joshua Douglas says that means it's back to the governor's office.

"He's the governor until he takes another position," he says.

On X, Beshear posted that it was an honor to be considered, describing Walz as a "great friend and a great choice," adding he fully supports the new ticket. Beshear was asked recently if — in the event of a Harris win — he might consider a cabinet position. On that question, the governor sounded less than enthusiastic.

"Well, I haven't heard anything about that and... I don't have any thoughts on on that. I love being governor. That would be a hard sell on me," he responded.

Now, Beshear says he will continue to work to elect Vice President Harris in the fall.
