Major donation results in name change for Town Branch Park

The long-awaited Town Branch Park in downtown Lexington is getting a new name.

That’s after a sizeable gift from The Bill Gatton Foundation, which has gifted record amounts to the University of Kentucky. The 10-acre park is set to receive $14.5 million from the foundation. Once it’s complete, it will be known as Gatton Park on the Town Branch.

Bill Gatton, a UK alum, passed away in 2022, but a trustee of the foundation said, if Gatton were still alive, he would have said Lexington “had been good to him” and would be pleased to help out with the construction of the park.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the donation will begin in 2025 with annual pledges over several years – as builders add trails, an amphitheater, dog park, and children’s play areas.

Gatton Park at Town Branch is slated to open in late summer next year.
