In a statement, Coleman said the concerns raised, along with a significant family history of cancer, led her to make the decision to have a double mastectomy.
She said the surgery — performed Monday — was a success and she is expected to make a full recovery. She went on to thank healthcare workers for their kindness and expertise, and urged Kentuckians to make sure they schedule preventative exams.
Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement Coleman is a "critical part of Team Kentucky" and his family and Kentucky families stand with Coleman during this time.
The medical procedure comes just days after Coleman became the first woman in Kentucky history to take the lieutenant governor's oath of office twice.
