Lexington residents living near Newtown Pike have long had a grocery on their wishlist. This holiday season, it’s looking like Kroger may soon deliver.

In an area of town where residents have had to buckle up for a bit of a drive to reach a grocery, there may soon be two grocers competing for their business.

In addition to a Publix store primed for construction at Citation Boulevard and Georgetown Road, a new Kroger may also be setting up shop.

The Herald-Leader reports the major grocery chain has submitted an application for one of its larger Marketplace-style locations to be built in the growing Newtown Springs Development area.

The proposal calls for a 122,000 sq. ft. grocery, with accompanying gas station and liquor store.

While the site is already zoned for a commercial grocery store, it would require the greenlight from the planning commission.
