In the sobering ad, Hadley Duvall, a 21-year-old from Owensboro, says she was raped by her stepfather at age 12 and that Cameron would allow someone in her position no options.
Responding to the ad, Cameron told Spectrum News he cannot “comprehend how traumatic the experience was,” and expressed appreciation for Duvall telling her story.
"My heart goes out to her and I want her to know that," Cameron said. "But when it comes to the issue of life... Look, this is a delicate issue and I was at church a couple weeks ago and our pastor talked about, on this issue in particular, we need to speak gently and kindly because it is such a sensitive issue and there are a range of different viewpoints on the question of life. Mine happens to evolve from my position on faith."
When pressed on his position about exceptions for rape or incest, Cameron reiterated his support for the commonwealth’s abortion law and stopped short of outlining specifics on how and why he would sign new exceptions into law, if elected.
"I support the Human Life Protection Act, and if something was to change, I would sign those exceptions if they came to my desk," he said, later repeating the refrain that he is the “pro-life candidate in the race.”
The Republican candidate has claimed that his opponent, Democrat Andy Beshear, wants “abortion with no limits.” Beshear has said he’s always opposed late-term abortions and that he believes in “reasonable restrictions.”
