UK renames residence hall in honor of Stanley and Karen Pigman, donors known for going the extra mile

University of Kentucky

Donors known for their unique personal approach to mentoring University of Kentucky engineering students now have their name emblazoned on a UK residence hall.

When Stanley and Karen Pigman take a UK student under their wing, it’s not just about signing over money for scholarships – although they certainly do. It’s about sharing in and serving as guides for undergraduates.

"To realize that I was going to build this lifelong relationship with them, it was definitely very humbling and one of the biggest surprises in college," says UK grad Olivia Henderson.

The incoming UK Otolaryngology intern has only glowing words for the UK donors, who have gifted UK in excess of $55 million over the years. But from her perspective, it’s not so much about the money as it is the Pigman’s desire to see each scholarship recipient through their journey, even after graduation.

"Each student is a very personal investment for them," she explains. "They care about the well-being of each of them and they want to know what your career goals are, also about who you are as a person. To be able to have that kind of support in college is priceless. I think the value of that was even more than the value of the scholarship itself."

In their honor, UK has literally carved their name into stone – turning the Woodland Glenn III building into Stanley and Karen Pigman Hall.
