The citywide observance set for January 16 regularly draws thousands from across the state. Chester Grundy, MLK Day event chairperson since 1974, tells WUKY there’s a reason the Lexington event has had such staying power.

Grundy says that means going beyond the oversimplified image and "soundbite" version of King so often presented in the media.
The annual Freedom March starts at 1 p.m. at the Central Bank Center on Monday and concludes with the Commemorative Program held at 2 p.m.

The celebration schedule includes:
- 6:30 – 9 a.m.: Unity Breakfast, a ticketed event hosted by the Alpha Beta Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Central Bank Center, Exhibit Hall A
- 1 p.m.: Freedom March, beginning and ending at Central Bank Center lobby
- 2 p.m.: Commemorative Program. Central Bank Center, Exhibit Hall A
