Sen. Mitch McConnell is joining Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in pressing for an expansion of NATO amid Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In a resolution first obtained by Politico, the Republican and Democratic Senate leaders urge the White House to rush the paperwork for Finland and Sweden to join the military alliance – clearing the way for the Senate to consider the matter.

McConnell says the countries both possess “formidable military capabilities” that surpass those of many existing NATO allies.

"Frankly, their participation strengthens the alliance significantly... The goal in the United States will be to approve that as rapidly as possible."
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

While Finland and Sweden have formally submitted their applications, Turkey blocked moves to speed the process.

A NATO expansion would require the approval of all 30 members and ratification by their parliaments, which could take up to a year.
