'A tragic loss.' Exercise trainer killed in accident at Keeneland

A training accident at Keeneland has left a young exercise rider dead and a community in mourning.

In the early hours of Friday, 20-year-old Callie Witt, a practice rider for trainer Joe Sharp, was thrown from a horse on Keeneland’s training track.

According to officials, Witt was treated by the track’s on-site medical team before being transported to UK Hospital, where she was pronounced dead from blunt force injuries.

A Nebraska native, Witt was a student at Bluegrass Community and Technical College.

In a release, Keeneland President Shannon Arvin said the incident has left colleagues heartbroken, adding, “Our hearts and prayers go out to Callie’s family, friends, and our collective racing community at this difficult time.”

Bloodhorse reports Keeneland held a moment of silence in her honor before beginning its closing-day Friday program.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
