Kentucky House passes ban on older transgender athletes

The Kentucky House has advanced a measure that would bar transgender girls from participating in school sports that match their gender identity from sixth grade to college. Because the the Republican-backed bill was amended in House, it now heads back to the Senate for concurrence. Karyn Czar reports from Frankfort.

Supporters of SB 83 like Representative Ryan Dotson who is sponsoring the bill say the legislation is needed to protect girls’ sports and prevent unfair advantages.

Opponents argued that while the bill covers student athletes through the college level, it only applies to kids in grades six through eight because the KHSAA already has their own regulations regarding transgender athletes and the NCAA sets the rules at the college level.

The bill passed but because it was amended in the House, it needs to go back to the Senate for approval before it will land on the Governor’s desk.
