Expect new mask guidance at UK soon, president reports

University of Kentucky president Eli Capilouto says the school is likely to issue new guidelines regarding facemasks next week.

In a campus letter, Capilouto referenced the recently altered guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, which would loosen the masking recommendation for the vast majority of the country. But he also noted that Fayette County and much of the state remain in a zone where masks are still recommended.

Given those competing factors and the positive trends in the commonwealth, Capilouto said the school will be consulting with its health professionals, elected leaders, administrators, and deans to determine next steps.

Whatever the decision, the president said masks will "continue to be an important tool for many in our community" who are sick, immunocompromised, or simply wish to keep the added layer of protection.

The new university guidelines are expected next week.

Just over 92% of the UK community — including UK HealthCare, faculty, students, and staff — are now vaccinated, according to the university.
