Lawmakers gavel in, hold moment of silence for storm victims, on day one of 2022 Session

The 2022 Legislative session is underway in where redistricting and the budget top a packed agenda. WUKY’s Karyn Czar reports from Frankfort.

The house gaveled in at noon on Tuesday and on the opposite end of the third floor of the Kentucky State Capitol, The Senate did likewise. in that chamber the new redistricting maps in the state were the main topic. Senate President Robert Stivers says they follow all the guidelines. Those maps haven’t been made available to the public and some lawmakers have only seen a pdf. Stivers was also asked if he would consider giving the Governor back his emergency powers so that a school mask mandate could be issued. He responded no. On the House floor, legislators debated rules that would limit debate, House Resolution 1 was adopted. And Representative Richard Heath of Mayfield, spoke for his constituents in Western Kentucky, hit by deadly storms last month.
