The Lexington Tenants Union works to educate renters on their rights and the resources available to them. The term ‘tenant’ also encompasses those who are houseless or whose bank owns the loan for their home.
Co-chair Foster Petrey says 300 eviction court hearings were scheduled for the month of December, putting tenants in a precarious situation during the holidays.
“The court can choose not to do some of these evictions, or at least reschedule them until a later time. We’re just asking for Lexingtonians in general to call in to the district court and leave a message for their judges asking them to keep their neighbors in their homes for the holidays.”Lexington Tenants Union co-chair Foster Petrey
Petrey says the pandemic, economic inflation, and a steady rise in rent has led to a flood of evictions. The tenant’s union is seeking signatures for a petition demanding no evictions before Christmas.
