Kentucky remains under a winter storm warning and a State of Emergency continues. Monday morning Lexington’s Mayor, Transportation officials and the Governor are asking you to limit travel today and tomorrow. Two storms are hitting the Commonwealth this week. “These storms will affect most of the Commonwealth with potentially dangerous conditions much of this week,” said Governor Beshear. “The first began overnight and these systems are expected to continue until Thursday night. Fayette County is now under an ice-storm warning until 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Due to the weather, the Kroger regional COVID vaccination center in Frankfort will be closed tomorrow and Governor Beshear said if you had an appointment, it will automatically be rescheduled at the same time next Tuesday. All other regional sites were closed tomorrow. Beshear does not expect the additional appointments later this week and next week because of cancelations due to the weather will impact the state’s ability to vaccinate everyone who is scheduled. He calls it a “good test run” for when supplies of the vaccine are increased. Plans are also in place to move any vaccines that need to be kept cold in case of power outages.
Transportation Secretary Jim Gray said road crews have plenty of salt supply and are working at full capacity but there are two primary concerns. “A forecast of heavier snow that will at times exceed our ability to keep the roads plowed,” said Gray, and “the National Weather Service is warning that travel conditions will become difficult to impossible by this afternoon and into tonight.”
The Governor also announced that the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management activated the State Emergency Operations Center during last week’s storm. It has remained active since and is now operating at level three.
In Lexington, Mayor Linda Gorton activated the City’s Emergency Operations Center at 4:00 Monday morning to coordinate the response to the weather and the Mayor declared a Stage One Emergency that will begin at 6:00 p.m. today. It requires you to move all vehicles parked on designated snow emergency routes or risk being towed.
