McConnell Calls For Lincoln-Douglas Style Debate With McGrath

Sen. Mitch McConnell is challenging Democrat Amy McGrath to a "socially-distanced, Lincoln-Douglas style debate."

The Republican majority leader is proposing a televised debate with no notes, no props, and no in-person audience.

In a letter, McConnell wrote that Kentuckians deserve "clear answers from each of us on the issues that matter most."

While there was no immediate comment from the McGrath campaign, the candidate has since tweeted a response addressed to Team Mitch - saying the McGrath camp is "eager to hold your boss accountable for his 36 years of failed leadership." It went on to say if the senator is serious about debating he should directly message her rather than "hiding behind the press."

While recent polls have shown McGrath trailing McConnell, the gap has ranged from 17 points to just 5 in a Quinnipiac University Poll. Both Real Clear Politics and the Cook Political Report rank the race as "likely Republican."
