With the partial government shutdown dragging on with no signs of hope from Washington, Kentucky Utilities is trying to get out the word about programs that could assist federal workers who have been furloughed.
Government shutdowns always cause headaches for federal workers, but KU spokesman Daniel Lowry says the utility company understands that the current situation is unusual.
"We try to hlpe all of our customers who are having difficulty managing their bills, but this is definitely a unique situation that we know a lot of people are having to go through," he says.
Lowry says anyone who fits that description should call KU at (800) 981-0600. They’ll be asked to send proof of their government employment and the impact of the furlough, and Lowry says the company will work with the customer on a case-by-case basis.
"In many cases there is help available. A budget payment plan is one way do that, which is very helpful to even out the payments," he explains. "So when you have a really cold winter month, like February or January, it's able to level that out, so it's not as much in that month."
