The Fayette County School Board is expected to vote on a potential solution after identifying several schools that tested positive for high levels of radon.
Radon gas is odorless, it’s colorless and it’s tasteless. It’s also radioactive and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. A few weeks ago it was found in nine schools here in Fayette County. They are: Booker T. Washington Intermediate, Bryan Station High School, Leesetown Middle, LTMS, SCAPA and Mary Todd, Russell Cave and Sandersville Elementary Schools. A letter that was sent home to parents said in part "There are health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high levels of radon but please be assured that the levels in our buildings did not approach that level of concern.”
Tonight at 6:30, The Fayette County School board will vote on whether or not they will allocate more than $500,000 to fix the problem.
