Lexington’s Urban County Council unanimously passed a resolution Thursday that lowers the speed limits of several downtown streets from 35 to 25 miles per hour. Affected roads include Cooper, Waller, Limestone, Virginia, Upper, Jefferson, Second through Fourth Street, and sections of High Street and Loudon Avenue. It will cost $5,900 to change the signs, but city officials hope the lower speed limits will reduce the amount of downtown traffic accidents. Downtown roads that are also state highways, such as Main and Broadway, will have their limits remain at 35 miles per hour.
