Hundreds of people were able to wipe away parking tickets in Fayette County by helping those in need.
Last year The Lexington Fayette County Parking Authority wanted to find a way to put the spirit of giving into the holidays and they made it a two-fold gift. Gary Means, Executive Director of LexPark said they heard about a program in Boston that gave discounts to anyone who had a parking fine if they would donate a toy. Then other cities followed suit by erasing tickets in exchange for cans of food. LexPark got on board and it was a huge success they brought it back in 2015. “Specifics of the program this year were that 10-cans would get you a $15 credit off of any parking citation and you could bring in multiple of ten if you had more citations or more expensive citations”
Means said this year’s Food for Fines Drive exceeded expectations. “This year we actually went far beyond what we did last year. The first year we did it we brought in about 6,200 cans of food and this year we topped the 10-thousand mark.”
All the food collected is being given to God’s Pantry.
