LEX18.com

Richie Farmer was Mr. Kentucky Basketball at Clay County High School, a part of UK’s ‘Unforgettables’ and the state agricultural commissioner; but since March of 2014 he’s been known as federal prisoner number 16226-032.  On Friday he will be a free man.

Farmer, who became Kentucky’s Ag Commissioner in 2004, was convicted of abusing his power while in office by having state workers build a basketball court at his home, serve as chauffeurs and other personal odd jobs.  He also spent more than $120,000 of taxpayers’ money on gifts and gave government positions to his friends and family.

Farmer will be taken to a halfway house in Lexington when he’s released from the West Virginia prison this Friday.  He was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison and was incarcerated in March of 2014.
