Kentucky's major party candidates for governor sought to shed their big-city backgrounds and highlight their small town roots in a forum before the Kentucky Farm Bureau on Thursday.
Republican nominee Matt Bevin and Democratic nominee Jack Conway both live in Louisville, Kentucky's largest city. But Kentucky has more than 76,500 farms, ranking it sixth in the country and offering a reliable base of voters.
Bevin touted his upbringing on a small farm in New Hampshire and his experiences with the 4-H Club as a young man. Conway said he is one generation removed from a family farm in Union County.
Conway attacked Bevin for opposing federal farm subsidies and tax breaks for agriculture. Bevin said he opposes some tax breaks, but not the ones for agriculture.
