Debate on a possible minimum wage increase in Lexington is set to resume in August.
Previous signals sent by the city’s Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee suggested the Urban County Council might hold off on debating the increase until the dust settles on Louisville’s recently-instituted wage hike, which is expected to face further legal challenges by a group of area business owners.
Tuesday, the council voted to revive the discussion at a special August 20th meeting. Councilman Bill Farmer told WUKY last week city leaders have yet to dig deep into the details of the proposal.
"The council has only been caught up in the showmanship around the issue," he said. "We really have never talked about the legislation... If you're going to pass something like that, you don't go in and order everything on the menu. You order what you want to eat. In this instance, we need to look at this and see what is right for us."
The council is considering a three-year phased-in increase up to $10.10 an hour.
