As Temperatures Fall, Homeless Become Top Priority

The Compassion Caravan is set to hit the streets of Lexington tonight, looking for anyone who needs shelter as temperatures fall into the teens.

Ginny Ramsey, Director of the Catholic Action Center and the Community Inn says the weather will create a life and death situation for the city’s homeless.  “Our folks will not survive.  They will not survive when the temperatures are going to be what they are.”

Ramsey said volunteers are needed tonight to locate those people and help them survive. “The volunteers will be given a route to take.  One of our guides will go with them.  They’ll have supplies to give out because some folks won’t come in and we have to respect that, we can’t force them to but we can make sure that they have extra supplies to make it through the frigid nights ahead.”

Volunteers will leave the Community Inn at 7:45 tonight.  Lexington has activated its Emergency Weather Plan.  Warming centers will be open throughout the city for people seeking shelter from the cold.
