Transylvania University is the latest school to join the Kentucky Agriculture Department's Farm to Campus Program.
State Agriculture Commissioner James Comer says the initiative encourages universities to buy as much local food as possible and to sign contracts with multiple growers. The department says Transylvania joins eight other colleges and universities participating in the program.
Angela Poe, the sustainability director at Transylvania, says joining the program shows the Lexington school's commitment to sustainability. Poe says that buying local food reduces the miles traveled between farm and consumers, supports the local economy and provides income for farmers.
Other schools participating in the Farm to Campus Program are Asbury University, Campbellsville University, Eastern Kentucky University, Georgetown College, the University of Louisville, Morehead State University, Murray State University and the University of Pikeville.
