Kurtz Expects Both Candidates To 'Play It Safe' During KET Debate

Hall of Fame Journalist and WUKY Political blogger Ken Kurtz says a lot is on the line for both candidates in their only scheduled TV debate.

Kurtz has been covering political campaigns in and out of Kentucky for more than three decades.

In a pre-debate interview with WUKY Kurtz said he could not recall a more important candidate forum in Kentucky than tonight's scheduled showdown between Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democrat challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes.

"Senator McConnell has to play on his experience.  He's got it.  He can do more for Kentucky by virtue of his position, and should the Senate fall to the Republicans that position is even more enhanced.  Mrs. Grimes I think has to play on the fact that after all of these years in Washington we still have lots of problems in Kentucky, and why hasn't the senator, with his position and experience, been able to do more for the home state?"

Asked to speculate on what the respective campaign managers might be saying to the candidates before tonight's debate, Kurtz offered:  "Don't make a mistake.  Have your facts straight.  Treat your opponent with almost exaggerated kindness.  Watch out for the hair splitting.  But I guess above all, don't make a mistake," Kurtz said.

The KET debate, moderated by Bill Goodman will air in its entirety on WUKY HD-2 beginning Tuesday afternoon at 5.
