New Purple Heart License Plate Honors Combat Wounded

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is releasing the new design of the Purple Heart veterans’ license plate Dec. 1.

The new plate adds the phrase “Combat Wounded” to clarify the qualifications for a Purple Heart medal.

“The new design declares that veterans who display the Purple Heart license plate received the Purple Heart medal for wounds suffered in combat,” said Heather French Henry, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs.

In 2013, the Kentucky General Assembly passed House Bill 272 authorizing the changed plate design with the phrase “Combat Wounded” and an image of the Purple Heart Medal.  The bill directed KYTC to make the change during the next scheduled replating. That is now complete.

Current Purple Heart plate holders will receive the new plate when they renew the registration on their vehicles over the coming year.
