Lyric Theatre Getting Audit

The Lyric Theatre is being audited by the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

Reporting to the Urban County Council Tuesday, Lyric Treasurer Paula King said the audit wasn’t for any wrongdoing, but part of regular financial oversight.

“We’ve done some transition things, but really, it’s been 4 years and it’s time, so we’re ready for it.  Not that we weren’t ready before but it takes money to do it as well.  We have the money, so let’s get it done and that day we can move forward and build upon it," she said.

The theater sent out a request for proposals on the 19th and received four.  King says the board will decide on one after several meetings, starting on Friday.

“We should have an engagement letter by October the 15th and the audit should be done by the end of December and then it’ll be ready for the board to look at and the public for their review as well," she said.

The Lyric served as Lexington’s black theater during segregation and is a cultural landmark for the city’s African American community.  Although closed down in 1963, it was refurbished and reopened in 2010.
