The sound of construction may be a familiar one on the UK campus, but it’s also one Transylvania University students are hearing these days.
Friday, the liberal arts school officially broke ground on a new, yet-to-be-named residence hall in the former parking lot behind the William T. Young Campus Center.
Transylvania student government association president Tyler Baker said the $7M hall was a long time coming.
"The thing I'm really excited about is it's been 50 years since we've built dorms in this location," he says.
And there will be no mistaking the new facilities for their older counterparts.
"Clay and Davis, being buildings that were built in '63 and '64, they obviously lack a lot of modern amenities such as geothermal heating and cooling. The building is also going to have suites," Baker says.
Officials project that the four-story, 144-bed residence hall will be open to students by next fall.
