Plans for a Wal-Mart superstore in Versailles appeared to be shelved.
In an email Thursday obtained by the Lexington Herald-Leader, Carlson Consulting Engineers, the firm that put forward the Wal-Mart development plan, says the company is retracting the application.
The message offered no specifics on the reason for the decision, but Woodford County planning director Pattie Wilson says the email came just eight days after the state Transportation Cabinet turned down a request by Carlson to build a primary entrance on Troy Pike.
Wal-Mart’s plan called for a superstore to be built on 57 acres off Bluegrass Parkway.
Versailles mayor Brian Traugott expressed disappointment that the project has come to a halt, but some community members are cheering the decision. A “STOP Walmart in Versailles” Facebook page had garnered 675 followers.
Update (3:07 PM): A Wal-Mart spokesperson says while the company has no specific plans to announce, "we remain very interested in bringing the convenience and affordability of a Wal-Mart store to customers in Versailles."
