A Fayette County Public Schools educator has been chosen to take part in a five day program at the Library of Congress in Washington.
Joni Maloney is the FCPS library services coordinator.
She will join a select group of K-12 teachers on a trip to the nation’s oldest federal institution in July. Meg Steele with the Library of Congress says the program is not necessarily designed to make the teachers experts at finding materials at the library.
"There's no way one could ever - even somebody who's worked here for 20 years - could know exactly everything that's in the collections and how to it. The collections are just that vast," Steele says.
Instead educators will learn about using primary sources.
Steele says they hope to show teachers that "if you put the actual authentic items - letters, maps, diaries, photographs - into students' hands that that will just magnify the power of the learning that can take place."
The five day program runs from July 7 through the 11th.
