Kentucky Theatre Ready For Its Closeup

Friends of the Kentucky Theatre

The Kentucky Theatre, the beloved movie house in downtown Lexington, will celebrate its grand re-opening tonight.

Some enchanted evening, indeed!

Long-time theatre manager Fred Mills says he’s looking forward to ushering in a new era for the landmark.

"We have the new digital projection and sound, new comfy seats which were desperately needed.  You know when you see people begin to bring cushions you know you're in trouble.  So we now have new seats, new carpet, some fresh paint, lots of LED lighting, and the marquis, which is really the landmark of not only the theatre but of downtown, has gotten a facelift," Mills told WUKY.

To celebrate the new era Mills says the Kentucky is screening a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, and welcoming a couple of well known guest hosts.

"Nick and Nina Clooney's first date was in the Kentucky Theatre.  So there might have not been a George if it hadn't have been for the Kentucky Theatre.  The first movie they saw here was South Pacific and in fact, when they were invited and they accepted, the Friends of the Kentucky asked them what film they would like to see and they chose South Pacific," Mills said.

Rumors are swirling that the Clooneys’ famous offspring, George, could pop in for the occasion.  Mills would not confirm that rumor to WUKY but he says he knows he was invited.  The event is sold out.  Festivities get under way tonight at 7.
