Lexington Gets A Lyft

A fleet of cars with trademark fuzzy pink mustaches will soon become a common sight in Lexington.

Last year, Lexingtonians’ experience with Lyft might not have gone much farther than a (not safe for work) viral video featuring Conan O’Brien, Ice Cube, and Kevin Hart.

But Thursday, that changed – as the made-for-mobile ridesharing app expanded into 24 new markets, including Lexington. The program matches people in need of a ride with local drivers who use their own cars and respond to requests through the company’s app.

Lyft plans to operate the service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Prices will be calculated based on time and distance with charges running 30 cents per minute and a $1.90 per mile.

To celebrate the expansion, the service is offering free rides in its new markets through May 8.

Josh James fell in love with college radio at Western Kentucky University's student station, New Rock 92 (now Revolution 91.7). After working as a DJ and program director, he knew he wanted to come home to Lexington and try his hand in public radio.
