Budget Conferees Squabble Over Rupp Renovations

A major sticking point has emerged amid state budget talks in Frankfort as lawmakers continue to hammer out a 2 year spending plan.

Those negotiations became contentious between House and Senate leaders during a conference committee, as House Speaker Greg Stumbo and Senate President Robert Stivers debated Rupp Arena financing and Washington politics.

Setting a rancorous tone to the talks, the leaders of the chambers struggled Saturday to agree on whether to allow Lexington Mayor Jim Gray to testify before the committee on whether or not renovations to Rupp Arena should be included in the state's biennial budget.

An eventual compromise was reached by the leaders, who allowed Gray to testify on the nature of the renovations and alternate funding sources for the project.

The state's Budget Conference Committee is expected by members of both chambers to last through the weekend.
